Quantitative Trading Division

The Quantitative Trading Division at SFIC represents a recent initiative with the goal of incorporating software technologies into SFIC's overarching mission of maximizing scholarship opportunities. This endeavor aims to enhance the value of UCSD's substantial alumni endowment fund, exceeding $1,100,000. It provides a unique platform for individuals possessing both technical expertise and a passion for finance to witness the practical application of their skills, directly influencing the operational dynamics of the student organization. Consequently, the outcomes of their contributions have a direct bearing on investment strategies concerning the alumni endowment fund.

Project Descriptions

Portfolio
Platform

FA23 - WI24

The core of SFIC's operations centers around its investment portfolio. Historically, details regarding SFIC's holdings were only readily available to members on the executive board. This project's objective is to establish a more accessible avenue for all SFIC members to retrieve this information, alongside supplementary analytics that can bolster their presentation preparations. Ultimately, this project will enhance the decision-making processes of our analysts and contribute positively to the overall efficiency of the organization. In terms of technology, this project will involve the development of a comprehensive web application. We plan on starting this project during Fall 2023 and wrapping things up in Winter 2024.

Backtesting
Platform

WI24 - SP24

Following the implementation of the portfolio platform to provide real-time data about our holdings for our analysts, our next step involves creating a full-stack backtesting platform. This platform will allow analysts to test their investment strategies using historical data, confirming their viability. This project will still be a full stack web application. However, it marks the beginning of our quantitative analysis efforts as there is a greater focus on the financial aspects. We plan on starting this project during Winter 2024 and wrapping it up in Spring 2024.

Automated Trading

SP24 Onward

After establishing the two previously mentioned tools for our analysts, our next objective is the development of automated trading strategies. These strategies will autonomously execute quantitative trading operations. During this phase, our programs will engage directly with the funds within the student endowment, providing developers with the opportunity to exert a direct influence on the organization's outcomes. We are scheduled to start this project in Spring 2024. These three projects form the bedrock of the Quantitative Analysis division at SFIC. After they are done, our focus will shift towards the exploration and implementation of new Quantitative Analysis Strategies.
